Some news items from the past week . . .

Kathleen Dehmlow’s life sounds like the subject of a soap opera. Dehmlow, who died last week in Springfield, Minnesota, USA, aged 80, had, when younger, abandoned her children and run off with her husband’s brother. Her family’s obituary was published in her local newspaper, the Redwood Falls Gazette:
Some comments posted by readers :
"Be good to your kids folks - they'll choose your nursing home and likely write your obit."
“Don’t hold back Gina and Jay, what’s really on your mind.”

A man in Luzino, a village in the Omsk region of Siberia, found a skull while planting potatoes. He told his 60 year old wife, who told him not to worry, it t was the remains of her first husband who she had axed to death and buried 20 years earlier. How would you not worry? Would you ever be able to go to sleep again next to her?
She told hubby “Bury the remains again, forget about it, and we won't tell the police.” He did tell the police and she confessed that she had killed him with an axe, dismembered him and buried him in the potato patch after he had come home and beat her. She told everyone that he had gone to work and that he hadn’t come home. She now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years.

“Surely he must have wondered why his potatoes grew to the size of footballs.”
“The question is, how many husband potatoes has this poor unsuspecting spouse eaten?”
“Mr Potato Head.”
“Mildred your garden grows so well, what kind of fertilizer are you using.”

Reverend Mike Upton of the Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit in Surfers’ Paradise, Queensland, Australia, was not intending to be controversial, he just wanted to put a message up on the Church’s message board that people should let go of their negative thoughts instead of talking about it. A spokesperson for the Church explained: You don't open your mouth and yell at somebody, you close your mouth and swallow. If you want to say something, keep your mouth closed for a bit.”
Unfortunately the message was not taken that way by the public:
The higher ups made the Church take the sign down, however not before Surfers Paradise Member of Parliament John-Paul Langbroek, posted a selfie with the sign and captioned the photo 'This will get the punters in …'

Mother Georgy Cohen visited a kindergarten classroom in the United States this week where her child was set to attend school, when she noticed something on the wall. She posted it on social media, without identifying the school, where it has drawn both praise and condemnation, frequently being described as “a sick sign of the times”.
On the wall, next to a chart showing the alphabet, was the lyrics to a song, sung to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star:
Lockdown, lockdown,
Lock the door,
Shut the lights off
Say no more.
Go behind the desk and hide,
Wait until it’s safe inside.
Lockdown, lockdown,
It’s all done.
Now it’s time to have some fun.
The song is about what to do in case of a school shooting or similar situation. It has been pointed out that many schools, from kindergarten up, have regular school shooting drills.

Sergeant Pascoe once said in the Brit detective series Dalziel and Pasco:
"Soccer is hooligans acting like gentlemen, Rugby Union is gentlemen acting like hooligans and Rugby League is hooligans acting like hooligans."
This was echoed by Lee Molloy, the owner of Headquarters, a swanky bar on the waterfront at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour. At the request of some patrons, Molloy let Rugby League fans watch the first State of Origin match on his widescreen TV, reputedly the biggest TV screen in New Zealand.
Molloy was not happy afterwards and vented on his Facebok page . . .

“Take a chull pull broo”
“He's just bitter and squeaky because he couldn't make it as a jockey.”
