IMD

As readers will know from yesterday’s post, March 8 is International Women’s Day.

It started me wondering whether there is an International Men’s Day. I looked into it and found not only that there is such a day but that enquiries about it always peak on March 8.

Some comments:
  • International Men's Day (IMD) is an annual international event celebrated on 24 November.
  • It began in 1992 and it is mooted that UNESCO may become involved in it.
  • The objectives of celebrating an International Men's Day include focusing on men's and boys' health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.
  • It is also regarded as an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care. The broader and ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic humanitarian values.
  • International Men's Day is celebrated in over 70 countries.
  • International Men's Day is followed by Universal Children's Day on 20 November, forming a 48-hour celebration of men and children, respectively.

Most enquiries about IMD take place on International Women’s Day:

According to the UK website Mirror, “The weirdest thing about International Men's Day is that nobody seems to care on the actual day.”

The following graphs are from that site:

According to that site:
International Women's Day is far more popular:

If you compare the two trends, it's obvious that far more people are looking for information about International Women's Day. Maybe that's because so many people are convinced International Men's Day doesn't exist.
