DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
|
July 3 – August
|
Brett
resides in the US where they are coming into summer. The dog days are the sultry part of the
summer, supposed to occur during the period that Sirius, the Dog Star, rises
at the same time as the sun, reckoned by the Romans from July 3 to August 11.
Sirius, the brightest star of the summer sky, is one of the stars of the
Great Dog (Canis Major) constellation.

INTERNATIONAL CHICKEN WING DAY
|
July 1, others regard the appropriate date as July 29
|
Buffalo
Wings are breaded, generally deep-fried and then coated or dipped in a sauce
consisting of a vinegar-based cayenne pepper hot sauce and melted butter. But why are they called Buffalo Wings? The dish was invented in 1964 at Anchor Bar
in Buffalo, New York by Teressa Bellissimo.

INTERNATIONAL JOKE DAY
|
July 1
|
The
origin of International Joke Day is unknown but its purpose is not: tell
someone a joke. So I will get the ball
rolling by reposting one of my favourites (who cares if you have heard it
before, good jokes don’t get stale) . . .
The
only cow in a small town in Poland stopped giving milk. The people did some
research and found that they could buy a cow from Moscow for 2000 rubles, or
one from Minsk for 1000 rubles. Being frugal, they bought the cow from Minsk.
The
cow was wonderful. It produced lots of milk all the time, and the people were
amazed and very happy. They decided to acquire a bull to mate with the cow
and produce more cows like it. Then they would never have to worry about the
milk supply again.
They
bought the bull and put it in the pasture with their beloved cow.
However,
whenever the bull came close to the cow, the cow would move away. No matter
what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he
could not succeed in his quest. The people were very upset and decided to ask
the rabbi, who was very wise, what to do. They told the Rabbi what was
happening; "Whenever the bull approaches our cow, she moves away. If he
approaches from the back , she moves forward. When he approaches her from the
front, she backs off. An approach from the side and she just walks away to
the other side."
The
Rabbi thought about this for a minute and asked, "Did you buy this cow
from Minsk?" The people were dumbfounded. They had never mentioned where
they had gotten the cow. "You are truly wise, Rabbi. How did you know we
got the cow from Minsk?"
The
Rabbi answered sadly, "My wife is from Minsk."

I FORGOT DAY
|
July 2
|
Created
by Gaye Anderson, this holiday encourages people to apologise and make up for
all the events and occasions they might have forgotten in the past few
months.
Do
something nice for those whose birthdays and anniversaries you missed and write
a nice apology note. Create an online reminder or calendar for all the
special occasions in your life. Keep a diary, use a reminder system in the office
where items come up for review periodically.
----------------
A
group of guys, all aged about 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally
it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the
waitresses there were pretty.
Ten
years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should
meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View
restaurant because the food was good and the wine selection was excellent.
Ten
years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet
for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View
restaurant because they could dine in peace and quiet and the restaurant had
a beautiful view of the ocean.
Ten
years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for
lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View
restaurant because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had an
elevator.
Ten
years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they should meet for
lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View
restaurant because they had never been there before.

WORLD UFO DAY
|
July 2
|
World
UFO Day is an awareness day for people to gather together and watch the skies
for unidentified flying objects. The day is celebrated by some on June 24,
and others on July 2. June 24 is the date that aviator Kenneth Arnold
reported what is generally considered to be the first widely reported
unidentified flying object sighting in the United States, while July 2
commemorates the supposed UFO crash in the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident. The stated goal of the July 2 celebration
is to raise awareness of "the undoubted existence of UFOs" and to
encourage governments to declassify their files on UFO sightings.
