He was on his way home after the Yalta conference, a secret meeting with President Roosevelt of the United States of America and Joseph Stalin, President of the USSR, held at Yalta on the Black Sea in the Crimea. Both Roosevelt and Churchill flew long detours to keep away from enemy territory.
