Henry Louis Mencken (1880 – 1956) was an American journalist, satirist, cultural critic and scholar of American English. One of the most influential American writers and prose stylists of the first half of the twentieth century, he was also opposed to religion, populism and representative democracy, which he believed was a system in which inferior men dominated their superiors. He opposed American entry into World War I and World War II and his diary contains coarse terms and slurs to describe various ethnic and racial groups.
