Sydney's Suburbs

Beginning an occasional look at Sydney's suburbs, including inner city suburbs, in alphabetical order . . .

Abbotsbury:

Abbotsbury is a suburb of Sydney and part of the Greater Western Sydney region, located 39 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. It falls within the local government area of Fairfield.

The suburb was named after Major Edward Abbott, a Canadian born soldier who came to New South Wales in 1790. Abbott was granted land in what is now Abbotsbury in 1806 although he sold it to a William Browne in 1810. The estate remained intact until the late 19th century when it was subdivided into small farms and it remained a rural area until the late 20th century when residential subdivision began. The name for the suburb was approved in 1991.

According to the 2011 census, there were 4,194 residents in Abbotsbury. 63.6% of residents were born in Australia. The most common other countries of birth were Iraq 5.4%, Italy 4.2% and Vietnam 2.1%.

Abbotsbury hosts the annual Warrior Dash Fun Run, a 5 kilometre dash that includes 15 obstacles – fire, mud, barbed wire and the like. From what I can gather, it is also held in other countries.

This is from the site that hosts the run:

Join Cutting Edge Adventures Australia for the Warrior Dash Fun Run. Warrior Dash is a mud-crawling, fire leaping, extreme run from hell. this fierce running series is held on the most challenging and rugged terrain across the globe. Warriors conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits and celebrate with kick arse music, beer and warrior helmets! You’ll face a 5km run through The Dairy in Abbotsbury and take on a variety of crazy natural and man-made obstacles.
