Martin Luther King Jnr (1929-1968) was an American Baptist minister who became the leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Advocating civil disobedience and non-violence, and offering forgiveness, love and reconciliation in lieu of hate, discrimination, injustice and inequality, he has rightly become an iconic figure of the 20th century. King led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, organised protests in Birmingham, Alabama which drew worldwide attention because of the brutal police response and helped organise the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, the subject of an earlier Bytes. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In the final years of his life he also opposed the Vietnam War and poverty. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Rumours persist to the present day that the man convicted of his shooting, James Earl Ray, was part of a government conspiracy and cover up.
