Monday Pic

Readers who missed their Bytes on Sunday may be interested to know the reason I was away from my computer.

Kate, my wife, has of late commenced making beautiful scented candles (some are shown above) with natural soy wax. My suggested name for her business – “Where’s the Candle?” – was, however, rejected in favour of “Candles by Kate”.

Kate’s sister, Roberta, had organised a Candle Party in Canberra for last Sunday with a large number of people having confirmed intended attendance.

However, as one Mr Robert Burns once said “The best-laid plans o' mice an' men gang aft a-gley” and so it proved to be. During the night Kate received a phone call from Rob, who was at Canberra Hospital: Rob’s husband Kamil had suffered a heart attack. We spent most of the night with her at the hospital.   Kamil had a stent inserted and was monitored, eventually being out of danger and resting comfortably. Kate wanted to cancel the Candle Party but at Rob's encouragement it was decided to go ahead. It was a success, as were Kate’s candles. Rob said that the activity was a great means of being occupied and of lifting her spirits. Kamil will be going home shortly.

Thanks Rob; best wishes Kamil; well done Katie.

Some thoughts on candles:

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”
- Buddha

“How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.”
- William Shakespeare

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt

“You know you are getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.”
- Bob Hope

“We must view young people not as empty bottles to be filled but as candles to be lit.”
- Robert Shaffer
