Quote: Ernst Toller

“History is the propaganda of the victors.”

-       Ernst Toller

Ernst Toller (1893–1939) was a left-wing German playwright, best known for his Expressionist plays and serving as President of the short-lived revolutionary Bavarian Soviet Republic for six days.  He served 6 years in prison for his part in the revolution, was released in 1925 and was expelled from Germany in 1933 with the Nazi rise to power.  Suffering from deep depression (his sister and brother had been arrested and sent to concentration camps)) and financial woes (he had given all his money to Spanish Civil War refugees), Toller committed suicide by hanging in his hotel room at the Mayflower Hotel on May 22, 1939.
